Current Status of Embryo Deposition for the Patent Application of Transgenic Animals in Korea

Abstract

|
Advance in medical science and genomics research has increased the need of animal models. Recently, animals developed by transgenic method make a new market for the industrialized animals producing human proteins or having role for human disease model. Scientists try to protect their rights on animal, that need thousands of dollars to produce, by the registration of the patent right. Develop in cryopreservation enable one to freeze embryos without the use of a programmable freezing machine or complex protocols. These methods achieve high rates of survival when mouse embryos are frozen. Frozen stocks of transgenics can be maintained indefinitely in liquid nitrogen. Cryopreservation of these valuable animals not only protects them from environmental catastrophes, but also is an economical method of storing lines for future detailed analysis. In Korea, several kinds of transgenic animals are developed in several research groups. To protect their right by patent in Korea, scientist should submit their request to Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) with the Certificate of Embryo Deposit. Since 1999, 48 kinds of embryo for the patent purpose have been deposited on Korean Collection for Type Cultures (KCTC) at Korea Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB) that was authorized by KIPO.
